Jose Martinez, better known by his nickname “Chema,” has always had a passion for barbering. From a young age, he found himself fascinated by the art of cutting hair. As he put it, “Watching other people cut hair inspired me to become a barber. One person I would watch was 360gezzz.” This early fascination would eventually start a career in the barbering industry.
Chema’s journey to becoming a skilled barber was not an easy one. He said, “Lots of trial and error and mostly practicing with friends and family. Watched lots of youtube videos explaining how to become a barber. Also I would sit in the barber shop and shadow the other barbers.” His dedication and willingness to learn paid off, as he worked through countless hours of practice and observation.
For Chema, the rewards of being a barber are beyond just the technical aspects of the job. He finds joy in “working in a fun and friendly environment and being able to have a free schedule.” Additionally, he values the opportunity to “go to school” while still pursuing his passion. However, like any job, barbering comes with its challenges. Chema said, “Switching from cutting people’s hair at my house to now cutting people’s hair in the barber shop” and “getting a clientele and getting regular/returning customers” as some of the obstacles he faced early on.
Despite the challenges, Chema’s skills and dedication have set him apart from other barbers in his area. He states, “I offer more diverse cuts and in my opinion I am better than the other barbers in the shop.” His specialty cuts, are “tapers and crop top fringe,” have earned him a reputation. To stay on top of his game, Chema follows the latest hair trends and techniques through social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Looking back on his barbering journey, Chema reflects, “One thing that I would have definitely done differently looking back on my barbering journey is starting at a younger age and taking it more seriously.” However, his future goals remain determined, as he wants to “own his own shop” and attend barbering school after high school. With his talent, passion, and determination, there is no doubt that Chema will continue to make his mark in the barbering industry, one cut at a time.
